American rock band Goo Goo Dolls was formed in 1986 in Buffalo and initially it was called The Sex Maggots, but the group’s manager assured the musicians that such name would not be much appreciated by the press. Then the trio simply took the name from advertisement of the doll who could say “Goo goo”. Later the members of Goo Goo Dolls noted that they were about to play a gig, so they simply needed any name for the band.
The debut self-titled studio work Goo Goo Dolls was released in 1987. It was critically acclaimed and the listeners enjoyed both the trio’s original compositions and the cover-versions of Sunshine Of Your Love by the British rock band Cream and the famous Blue Oyster Cult’s (Don't Fear) The Reaper. Soon after the first release Goo Goo Dolls moved to Los Angeles and issued their second album Jed in 1989. In first long play the bassist Robby Takac was the lead vocalist; however in Jed two songs were sung by John Rzeznik. The band’s third album Hold Me Up was released in 1990 and that time John performed the lead vocals, becoming the constant lead singer. Also the sound was changed, because Goo Goo Dolls managed to combine such distant styles as heavy metal, pop rock and punk rock in a very successful way.
Goo Goo Dolls’ discography was enlarged by Superstar Car Wash in 1993. That studio attempt got wonderful reviews from the critics and the band was gaining popularity. The trio’s following album A Boy Named Goo (1995) turned out to be extremely strong and it was certified Double Platinum. Three years later the musicians issued another studio work titled Dizzy Up The Girl (1998), which proved to be even more successful than its predecessor: it got the Triple Platinum status. The long play of 2002 entitled Gutterflower presented the gloomy lyrics and included such hits as Here Is Gone, Sympathy and many others. Four years later Goo Goo Dolls issued Let Love In (2006), devoted to the band’s twentieth anniversary and the excellent compilation album Greatest Hits, Vol. 1: The Singles appeared in 2007.
The Goo Goo Dolls Band
The ninth studio attempt titled Something For The Rest Of Us was issued in 2010. It was acclaimed by numerous critics and the fans really enjoyed it as well. There is no doubt that this original and strong album, created in Goo Goo Dolls’ best traditions will be interesting not only for the trio’s old fans, but also for all the good rock music lovers. Moreover, the skills of the musicians are unquestionable, and Goo Goo Dolls created the reputation of extremely talented singers and instrumentalists.
